Lost in the Everyday

Landscape

One of the houses I visited at work today had an absolutely stunning view of the sea. I could have easily stayed there all day.

When I mentioned how amazing the location was, the owner of the house replied, "Yeah, but you don't think about it after a while."

It should be illegal to live like that if you don't even appreciate it, I thought as I walked back to my car. I started driving away and caught myself...

But what about me? I'm basically the same.

I don't live in a house with a sea view, but I have an apartment with a window overlooking a beautiful courtyard. And every morning when I walk to my car, I pass amazing old buildings.

How often do I think about it? Hardly ever.

Yet, it's something I once marveled at for its beauty. Where did that awareness go? I looked out the window now and it still looks absolutely wonderful, of course.

Okay, it's never going to be like "the first high" again, but that doesn't matter. Just a tenth of the first experience is still immensely precious and rewarding.

A tiny bit of awareness is all it takes to start observing and appreciating our surroundings. Let's remind ourselves of the beauty of the mundane.
