Dare to Fail

I listened to an interview with the Swedish artist Per Gessle, best known for his work with the band Roxette. When asked what the key to success is, he replied...

You have to dare, and you have to fail, and you have to make a fool of yourself, and you have to do terrible things to do good things.

It's easy to forget this when we look at people who have succeeded in one way or another. It's rarely an instant success from the start. A long line of failures and wrong decisions have led to the success.

The goal is just one part of the journey to success. If we're going to get from point A to point B, then we have to complete the entire journey. It doesn't matter if we have a first-class ticket in hand and a luxury hotel waiting, we have to get on the plane to get there.

We can't sit still and try to predict and plan everything in the smallest detail. Or, well – we can, but it won't lead anywhere. It’s like sitting in a rocking chair; it keeps us busy without getting us anywhere.

The actual road towards success is the most important teacher in life. It's only then, when we let go and throw ourselves out there, that we’re on the right track, no matter how long or short that track may be. There are no shortcuts.

We can sit on 100 blog post drafts, but it's only when we publish the first one that we really understand what it’s all about, what our role in all this is, where we can contribute and how to do it.

True success is daring to fail.
