You're not me

“If I were you, I would…"

Do you ever hear that? I think it’s such an incredibly stupid thing to say. If you were me - which you clearly aren’t - then you’d do something that I, as me, wouldn’t do.

Some might say it’s just a figure of speech. I beg to differ.

To me, it often sounds like the person saying it has a bunch of their own stuff they haven’t dealt with. Instead of facing that, they get a brief, fake sense of “I’ve got my shit together” by telling others what they should do.
